Advanced Security Training

The Advanced Security Course (AST) is designed to meet the needs of persons interested in enhanced safety training while working in the field of security. The course provides them with demonstrations, instruction and practice of physical control techniques. As well, understanding the applicable laws and regulations associated to the use of force and write the competency examination issued by the Justice Institute of B C (JIBC).

Participants are instructed the necessary skills and practice their abilities associated with being confronted with physical force. They will receive instruction on the Use of Force, Tactical Communication, Take Downs, Pressure Points, Use of Handcuffs and more. The course prepares them for work as Loss Prevention Officers, Special Events Security, or any position where physical force and handcuffing may be required. It also prepares them to write the Government of British Columbia Security Service examination issues by the Justice Institute of B C. Successful completion of this training will authorize the participant to carry and use handcuffs while working as a Licensed Security Guard in this province.

Credit:            Non Credit. Province of B C Licensing Requirement.

Instructor:      Contract service provider

Location:        Northern B C Guard Academy, 1919 17th Ave., Prince George B.C.

Time:              08:00 A.M. to 04:00 P.M. with 45min. /1 hour lunch breaks non-scheduled energy breaks each day.

Course Prerequisites:            Students must have a minimum of grade 10 reading, comprehension abilities, a solid grasp of the English Language, and have completed the Basic Security Training course.  They must also posses the physical ability and stamina to carry out basic self defense maneuvers.

Design:           three, eight hour days (or 4 X 6hr sessions)

Hours:            24 hrs. (including examination time)

Duration of Certification:    Must be repeated every three years and the term runs with your Security Guard Licence.

Delivery:         Lectures, reading from a booklet, group activities, role play and take part in physical demonstrations and exercises.

Course Content:        Security Services Act & Regulations, Advanced Force Options Theory, Introduction to Control Tactics, Application of Restraints, Excited Delirium & Positional Asphyxia and Reporting & Documentation

Required Text:          Advanced Security Training Manual.  This will be provided as pre-reading or on the first day of the course.

Evaluation:    Evaluation of learning, for this course, will be on the third or fourth day of the course when a Justice Institute of B C administered test will be administered.  The written test consists of fifty questions on information covered and in a pick the correct answer format.  Students must attain a mark of 75% or better to pass the test and meet the Province of British Columbia’s minimum standard for licensing.  They must also demonstrate proficiency to the instructor in the demonstrated control techniques.

Important Note:        Participants who are successful must make application to the Registrar for changes to their licenses.  They must present one piece of Government Issues Photo Identification (BCID, Drivers License or Passport) at the time of the testing.

Security candidates must be aware that this is an intense program that requires extensive commitment to their overall success.  Instructor support and direction is provided throughout the duration of the course..

Success Guaranteed Policy: Participants who act in a professional manner, take part in all physical training, complete all assignments, participate in class may return without charge.  There will be a retesting fee due the Justice Inst. of B C.
